Are there any famous caves and caverns noted or in Arizona?
This is for my research for my novel. Everything in the Saguaro National Park Lake?
Arizona has many famous natural caves that have become places of interest such as Kartchner Caverns and Colossal Cave, near Tucson in southern Arizona and Grand Canyon Caverns near Kingman, in Northern Arizona. There are many other smaller that there are no known or developed. Northern Arizona also has a series of lava tube caves near Flagstaff. These tend to be a meter long, as few passages Branches and do not have large rooms. Many of them retain the ice and snow of winter and referred to as "ice caves" (Lava River Cave is probably the best known and also the already closed "ice cave" in the Sunset Crater National Monument). There is a similar field of lava tubes in New Mexico near Gallup. Most tend to be quite short (1000 feet or less, while Lava River is about a mile). Note that very large classic caves "with many rooms and passages and stagmites, stalactites and other formations are generally associated with sedimentary rock formations of limestone. The area around Saguaro Lake (near the Superstition Mountains) instrusive is mainly igneous and volcanic rock which is not provided to limestone caves and consequently are not in that area. However, the formations rock around Saguaro Lake to time in such a way that fairly large alcoves and caves are formed frequently (the kind of places where prehistoric Indians built houses in cliffs). These can be quite large: 100 + feet deep, but not the kind of place that might Get Lost in One of the largest and most famous of these is the Apache Cave (also known as Skull Cave) north of Apache Lake where a number of Apaches were rounded up and killed by soldiers in 1872. Although the caves are not real The area also includes a large number of tunnels in old mines and dug wells seekers in search of gold, silver and copper.
