From the Earth slips have caused havoc in the village of Bantitwatte in Kekunadura, Matara, due to heavy rains experienced during the past week. About a year and a half hectares of land, 40 meters long have been subject to land slips causing severe damage to roads, disrupting traffic and destroying rice crop. Ellakanda reservoir and irrigation canal were built in 1870, situated in the village, bringing 1,200 hectares of land under rice cultivation.

An earthquake packing a magnitude of 6.0 hit off the Solomon Islands, two days after a 8.0 earthquake shook the area and generated a tsunami that killed at least 30 people. The latest quake was shallow and hit 139 kilometers [86 miles] northwest of Gizo, which was destroyed by tsunami 8.0 murderer, at 11:39 am [0039 GMT], according to U.S. survey geology. The quake was only 10km [6 miles] below the seabed, but no tsunami warning was generated.
The region has been rock by continuing aftershocks measuring up to 6.7 in force from the great earthquake and tsunami that struck two days ago.
Tsunami destroys 13 villages [3 April 2007]
Thirteen villages were destroyed when tsunami generated by a large earthquake hit the Solomon Islands, killing 28 people and leaving many more homeless.
The government declared a state of emergency after 8.0-magnitude earthquake off the islands' west coast, as officials warned the death toll could rise further as the scope of the devastation emerged.
Rescue rushed to the remote disaster area by plane and boat to help victims and assess the loss of life and poverty. Witness reported bodies floating in the sea after waves up to five meters. [16.5feet] high broke the islands.
Up to 4,000 terrified survivors huddled on the hill overlooking the resort's broken Gizo as repeated aftershocks with a magnitude up to 6.7 shook the area of violence overnight.
