Geoff Ogilvy made a big splash in the world of golf this year by winning the U.S. Open prestigious. Suddenly, I was on everyone's lips and they were all asking the same questions: Who is Geoff Ogilvy and where it comes?
Ogilvy is an Australian golfer who currently resides in Scottsdale, Arizona. This may be a surprise to many, but the U.S. Open was actually the third championship of Ogilvy on the PGA Tour. He had previously won the 2005 Chrysler Classic of Tucson and the 2006 WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship Last February 2006, before taking U.S. Open title in June. Under this string of victories, Ogilvy broke into the elite of world golf Top 10 for the first time, increasing to a maximum of eight.
Ogilvy was simply electric in the U.S. Open, finishing his round with a champion to succeed and make pars unlikely in the last two holes, a chip-shot 30 feet on the 17th hole and a drop of six feet at 18. He was fortunate, too, as Phil Mickelson handed the U.S. a lead of two shots with three holes to play.
As the first Australian player to win a golf tournament 11 years (since Steve Elkington at the PGA Championship 1995), The 29-year-old Ogilvy has been hailed as a hero in his homeland.
Tony Hallam, CEO of Golf Australia, said: "The reaction the Australian Public golf community in Australia to achieve Geoff has been phenomenal. Geoff's victory is especially important for golf in Australia and golf fans who were willing an Australian to win the tournament after drought in 11 years. No doubt this will inspire more young Australians succeed in international sports.
Ogilvy turned professional in May 1998 and won a European Tour card at school the rating of the year. He played on the European Tour in 1999 and 2000, finishing 65 in his first season and improving to 48 in the second. He joined the U.S. based on PGA Tour in 2001 and finished in the top 100 in each of his first five seasons. His first professional tournament victory was in 2005 on the PGA Tour Chrysler Classic of Tucson. In February 2006 defeated Davis Love III in the final of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.
