Most people think that the McDonald brothers of California started the fast food craze in America, but in fact was the hamburger chain White Castle that actually started fast food history in America. J. Walter Anderson opened the first White Castle in 1916 in Wichita, Kansas, and people will liked the cheap hamburgers, fries, and tails that are offered. However, fast food really did not become common in America until after the World War II, when Americans began to fall in love with their cars, and had leisure time and more money to spend on eating out.

The McDonald Brothers

The real heroes of the story of fast food in America are Richard and Maurice McDonald, the two brothers who created the first McDonald's restaurant in 1948 in San Bernardino, California. They wanted their restaurant to be more efficient and profitable, so he devised a simple menu in a small building without any kind of tables, so people took it and ate their food in their cars. In 1953, the brothers had decided to franchise his idea, and opened two franchises in Downey, California and Phoenix, Arizona.

Imitators

Since McDonald's had more success, others began to take note and copy your example to make its own history of U.S. fast food. Keith Cramer started an operation in Florida that became Burger King, and Ray Kroc, a salesman from the blender, was so impressed with McDonald's, who asked the brothers if they could sell their franchises. He opened his own McDonald's in Des Plaines, Illinois, in 1954, and finally bought the brothers and became the owner of the company. Kroc was the driving force behind the fantastic growth of the food chain to across America in the '50s and early '60s. Wendy's was created by Dave Thomas in Columbus, Ohio, where the first restaurant opened in 1962.

More babies arrivals

As fast food realized, and more people decided they liked to eat in their cars, food stores grew faster throughout the country. Jack in the Box was launched in San Diego, California in 1951 and in 1960 it had spread outside of California in other areas. Troy Smith opened the first unit SONIC-A in 1954 in Shawnee, Oklahoma, Dunkin 'Donuts first opened in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1950 and the first Taco Bell opened in 1962 in Downey, California. All these business operations are based at least loosely on the operation of McDonald's and then modified it to work with their special foods.

History Today

Today, fast food chains have spread worldwide, and have spread along the right of American culture with them. There are many more channels popular, as Carl's Jr., Arby's, Domino's and Dairy Queen products, indicating that fast food is not always about hamburgers. Of In fact, pizza, Chinese food, and almost any type of food imaginable are now available to perform in fast-food chains across the world. Food History U.S. fast is actually the basis of fast food as we know it today, and that history has made millionaires of many people who first established the concept fast food.

The California Pizza Kitchen Cookbook The California Pizza Kitchen Cookbook
$14.66

Ever since the first California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) was opened in Beverly Hills in 1985, founders Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield have been inundated with requests for their creative pizza recipes. As Larry and Rick explain in the introduction, the recipe for their success is simple - take America's favorite food cravings, like barbecued chicken, shrimp scampi, Peking duck, Thai satay, Southwestern burrito and BLT, and put them on a pizza. Until now, the official recipes were a secret. You could only get their California-style pizza at one of more than 80 CPK restaurants across the country, baked fresh in a wood-burning oven. The California Pizza Kitchen Cookbook includes all of your favorite pizza recipes, right off the menu, including the original BBQ Chicken Pizza, Thai Chicken Pizza, Shrimp Pesto Pizza, Santa Fe Chicken Pizza, and Mixed Grill Vegetarian Pizza. There are more than 25 delicious pizza recipes in all, plus an extra chapter with the creative CPK pastas, salads, soups and appetizers. And don't forget the dough - you'll also find recipes for CPK's Basic Pizza Dough as well as honey-wheat pizza dough, with step-by-step instructions and photographs so even a beginner can master the techniques of tossing dough at home. The best thing about The California Pizza Kitchen Cookbook - maybe even better than their recipe for BBQ Chicken Pizza - is that founders Larry Flax and Rick Rosenfield are donating all of the royalties to charitable organizations across the country. It's their way of saying thanks to Americans for all of their support.

Any university is composed of faculty, students, and staff. But these living components change over time and in varying degrees, while the campus buildings are more permanent, remaining for decades, a century, or longer. This book looks at the buildings that have graced the campus of Northern Arizona University from its opening in 1898 to the present. The school began with a single building, Old Main, and it was joined by five other structures prior to World War I. In the following decades the campus remained relatively small, expanding to approximately twenty-five structures by the late 1950s. During the tenure of President J. Lawrence Walkup (1957–1979), the university effectively doubled in size, spreading southward and adding more than forty buildings, including an entire south campus academic center. Since 1979 the campus has witnessed the addition of more than thirty structures, most as infill within the existing campus layout. Arranged chronologically, this extensively illustrated volume briefly describes the history of every building that has been a part of the university’s physical layout. The authors describe various structural aspects of each building and provide entertaining and informative anecdotes about events and people associated with the structures. By combing the university’s archives, Drickamer and Runge have turned up photographs of each building as it looked shortly after construction and at present, providing a fascinating visual time lapse. With more than two hundred images of campus buildings, many of them never before published, Northern Arizona University: Buildings as History provides a wonderful pictorial chronicle of the campus that will interest architectural historians as well as all those who have called NAU home.
